STANDARDIZED NEEDS ASSESSMENT AND REFERRALS FOR NEWCOMERS TO CALGARY
tHE problem
Immigrants arriving in Calgary face several barriers to integration.
This challenge is made more complicated due to a lack of coordination between agencies during client intake, assessments, and referrals. Data-driven tracking, gaps in information sharing, and a lack of visibility for immigrant-related services mean that many professionals and families are falling through the cracks and having their civic, economic, and social integration pushed back by years.
Limited financial resources mean that families and professionals have less time to find the programs and resources which can help them.
Did you know?

70 percent of Calgary immigrants do not access services due to a lack of awareness.

THE PROJECT
Gateway is a pilot project aimed at positively transforming the experience of newcomers in Calgary by streamlining activities with an emphasis on data sharing, planning, welcome packages, and referrals to organizations.

Needs Assessment
Built through community consultation, Gateway creates a standardized language & settlement assessment, which is given to clients seeking settlement services in Calgary.
Referrals
With intake activities complete, clients are given directions to multi-sector service agencies through a referral system innovated by the Gateway pilot project.
Settlement Plan
Following their assessment, clients are given a settlement plan tailored to their needs with a copy retained in a client management tracking system.
Reporting & Analytics Hub
Gateway's data collection on client trends and data is distributed to partners to help improve their own service delivery, forecast changes, and influence policy development.
Welcome Package
Clients collect a ‘Welcome to YYC’ package, which includes a list of services relevant to their settlement needs.
The journey
Rather than taking immigrants on a winding path, Gateway works with dozens of local agencies to design a new system focused on preparation and planning.
Aim for the stars
The first 12 months are essential for settlement and integration, and Gateway accelerates the process by getting them in touch with relevant services faster so they can achieve their dreams.
A well-equipped crew
By co-creating a multi-sector platform with the help of over two dozen local organizations, Gateway will simplify complicated referrals to help families and professionals arrive at their intended destination.
Flying solo takes longer
With lengthy connectors between agencies and repeated intake gate checks, it’s easy to miss the signs to other helpful services around you.
